Othello
by William Shakespeare January 8 - January 24, 2009 Set in the sun bleached colonial outpost of Cyprus, this tale boils with fury, sexual heat and consuming passions. The Moor Othello, a celebrated general but also an outsider, shares a boundless love with Desdemona, a Venetian aristocrat. Defying her family and social convention, they marry. However, the deceitful Iago, Othello's military aid, harbors a vengeful hatred for his commander and plants the seeds of jealousy that lead to catastrophe as the perfect union of Othello and Desdemona comes tragically unraveled. This tale of Love and Treachery features the talented Richard Baird as Iago.

Tartuffe
by Moliere March 5 - March 21, 2009 Religious zealot or diabolical hypocrite? In the character of Tartuffe, Moliere confronts those that would use religion as a front for treachery. The wealthy Orgon is convinced that Tartuffe is a genuine man of religion and takes him into his life, but soon the fraud has gained access to everything he has of worth. This hysterical farce caused a scandal when it was first produced under the reign of Louis XIV and still amuses today, three and half centuries later. Presented in the Richard Wilber version, considered a masterpiece of verse translation.

The Merchant of Venice
by William Shakespeare April 2 - April 18, 2009 Shakespeare's dark story of religion, race, and prejudice has caused controversy wherever it has been presented. Bassanio, a young man about town, is determined to woo the wealthy heiress Portia, but in order to finance his quest he needs three thousand ducats. He asks his friend Antonio, a rich merchant, for the money, who in turn borrows it from Shylock, a wealthy Jewish moneylender. The scales of justice and the bonds of family, friendship, and love are tested in a world of deception, faithlessness, and treachery. Set at the rise of Mussolini's Italy, this production will feature the performance of Artistic Director Jared Sakren in the role of Shylock, his first performance for the company. |
