JULIUS CAESAR OPENING

JC_POSTCARD_FRONT

On Friday, January 8, 2010, Southwest Shakespeare Company

will open the third production of its 16th Season.  This production

of Julius Caesar will dazzle with its period costumes, imposing

set, and dramatic lighting---to say nothing of the passionate acting

and gorgeously compelling language of one of Shakespeare's most

important tragedies.  Set in the time of the American Civil War,

I think this production will take our audience on an epic journey

as moving, shocking, and beautiful as any we have had on our stage,

or any stage in the country.  DO NOT MISS THIS SHOW!

"COMEDY" CLOSES ITS SUCCESSFUL RUN

The Comedy of Errors"THE COMEDY OF ERRORS" has closed and all costumes, set pieces, and props have been put away, and now, after the dust has settled we can look back on a highy successful run of our first production of our 16th Season. Many thanks to all the artists whose hard work and inspiration went into this very popular production. (see pic of Doc Coates as Egeon in the failed electrocution scene)

Kerry Lengel of the Arizona Republic wrote " 'Errors' hits funny bone…..This production, the season opener at Mesa's Southwest Shakespeare Company, features winning performances from its four leads. As the twin Antipholuses, Dan Good and Jesse James Kamps affect a Kevin Kleinish charm as they merrily abuse the two Dromios (Matt Rosin and Peter Good). Dawn Rochelle Tucker, a Southwest Shakespeare newcomer, is another standout."

Our student shows filled up and we beat all projections on their ticket sales. Students really loved this show. We got many, many letters from them, all glowing. Here are a just a few excerpts from the high school students:

"At first when I heard I was going to see a Shakespeare play I thought it was going to be super boring but it wasn't. As soon as I was done reading the play, then saw it and my rating for the play went up big time!"

"The play isn't exactly what I pictured (in a good way). I thought it was going to be a little bit boring but I had a really wonderful time and I thought it was very funny."

"I think Shakespeare is really cool."

"This is the best play I have ever seen."

These folks can be brutally honest, and we do appreciate their enjoyment of "The COMEDY OF ERRRORS." If you did, too, or missed the show entirely, please come to see our next offering, "THE COMPLEAT WORKS OF WLLM SHKSPR (abridged)" with Pete Good, Michael Bailey, and Jon Gentry.  If you thought COMEDY was amusing...wait until you get a load of this one. But hurry--- the first two weekends are already selling out!

PREPARATIONS FOR THIS COMING SEASON

Greetings to all patrons and soon-to-be patrons! Southwest Shakespeare Company is preparing for our 16th Season and getting very excited, as I know many of you are, for a season that promises to offer something for everyone, including those who don't like Shakespeare! Hard to imagine such people, I know, but many have said that THE COMPLEAT WORKS OF WLLM SHKSPR (abridged) is for those who love the Bard and those who hate him (both of you out there)but it is pure rollicking entertainment regardless. Of course our first show, THE COMEDY OF ERRORS, needs no introduction. The title says it all, and it is the Bard's shortest play: fast, hilarious, action-packed. JULIUS CAESAR will be set in the American Civil War period to emphasize the themes of assassination, loyalty, personal advancement vs. the public good, and, of course....civil war. BLITHE SPIRIT is surely for those who want great entertainment, and a break from Shakespeare. But don't let the laughs fool you, there is a lot of heart in this play, with themes of time, memory, the persistence of love, and the after-life. Winding up the season is the unforgettable tragedy of RICHARD III, with Richard Baird in the title role. Those of you who have seen Richard on our stage in recent years playing such roles as Iago, Cyrano de Bergerac, Petruchio, Tartuffe, Leontes, and many others, know that this performance cannot be missed! So, as prep continues, as we engage the finest actors, designers, and technicians to present the finest in classical theatre, we know you will want to subscribe to this most wonderful and promising season. Hurry, though, as subscriptions are selling fast and you will want to reserve the best seats!

2008-9 Season Ends, Another Is Coming Up!

Thank you to all of our loyal supporters and patrons for helping to make our 2008-9 Season a great success. We produced both A WINTER'S TALE and TARTUFFE for the very first time, and had wonderful new productions of AS YOU LIKE IT, OTHELLO, and THE MERCHANT OF VENICE that you all enthusiastically applauded, often with standing ovations. We are very gratified by your support. Please renew your subscriptions for this next, wonderful season, or become a subscriber if you are not one already. Being a subscriber to Southwest Shakespeare Company offers the best deal for theatre in the Valley of The Sun. Check it out on our website, or call or email for more information. Next season we will be opening with the riotous THE COMEDY OF ERRORS, followed up by the hilarious COMPLEAT WORKS OF WLLM SHKSPR (abridged) which will surely sell-out quickly, then comes the great tragedy of JULIUS CAESAR, followed by BLITHE SPIRIT (the delightful comedy by Noel Coward, with Jared Sakren as Mdm. Arcati) and lastly the timeless tragedy of RICHARD III, with Richard Baird in the title role, one of the most dramatic plays Shakespeare ever wrote featuring one of his most unforgettable villains. Surely, this is a season that is not to be missed!
