ROMEO AND JULIET
By William Shakespeare
January 5 – 21, 2012 in the Virginia G. Piper Repertory Theater

Shakespeare’s timeless tale of star-crossed lovers and undoubtedly the most famous love story in the English language, Romeo and Juliet teaches us the meaning of love, of forgiveness, and the terrible price of hatred and violence.

Kerry Lengel of The Arizona Republic had this to say, ""For the record, Southwest Shakes’ current production features a wonderfully dilapidated set – a reminder of just how ancient Verona’s noble houses are – and a strong cast. Ali Rose Dachis, from Minneapolis’ Guthrie Theater, is a charming Juliet, and Andrés Alcalá’s Friar Lawrence kicks some serious gravitas. There are some nice staging touches, including some effective direct address, and I loved the ominous music in the sound design."

"You’ll find plenty that’s new in the Southwest Shakespeare Company production of Romeo and Juliet …..[it] will heighten your appreciation for parts of the story you might have overlooked. Many in the audience remarked that the production gave them a greater understanding and appreciation for the language of this play. The journeys of Romeo and Juliet from childlike wonder to grown-up woe are well portrayed in this production…Andrés Alcalá (Friar Laurence during the evening performances) delivers an especially compelling performance." said Lynn Trimble from Raising Arizona’s Kids.
