​AUDITIONS ANNOUNCED FOR SHAKESPEARE'S MEASURE FOR MEASURE

 

Auditions for MEASURE FOR MEASURE (Directed by Keath Hall) will be held on March 30th, 2026 at the Mesa Arts Center Second Floor Acting Studio. Callbacks will be held on March 31st, 2026. 1 E. MAIN STREET, MESA, 85201.

Please prepare 1-2 Classical monologue(s) approximately 45-90sec. Shakespeare a plus but not required. It is more important that you know it well and can take adjustments. 

 

Rehearsals start APRIL 20TH, 2026, Monday -Friday 6pm-10pm and Saturday 10am-4pm. This production performs in the Sagebrush Theatre located in Scottsdale MAY 15-24TH (FRI-SUNDAY). TECH IS MAY 11TH-14TH 6PM-11PM

 

Synopsis: Duke Vincentio leaves strict deputy Angelo in charge of an unchecked Vienna. Angelo condemns Claudio to death for impregnating his fiancée, prompting Claudio’s sister, novice nun Isabella, to plead for mercy. Angelo lustfully demands Isabella’s virginity for her brother’s life. The Duke through trickery must navigate his way through a parade of characters and try to bring some balance. Hypocrisy and sin are comedically put on trial in this rarely done show.

Seeking: (All persons of any ethnicity are encouraged to audition)

- DUKE (Male presenting 30s-60s) The ruler of Vienna who pretends to leave on a diplomatic mission but instead remains in the city disguised as a Friar.

 

- ESCALUS (Any gender, 40s-60s) A wise and compassionate older lord who advises Angelo to temper justice with mercy.

​

- PROVOST/ ELBOW (Any gender 20s-40s) Provost is the empathetic prison warden. Elbow is a violent and dim-witted constable. 

​

- ANGELO/ ABHORSON (Male presenting, 20s-40s) Angelo is The Duke's rigid and puritanical deputy. Abhoson is an executioner.

​

- JULIET/ MARIANA/ MISTRESS OVERDONE (Female presenting, 18-30s) Juliet is sentenced to death for engaging in premarital sex. Mariana is a woman formerly betrothed to Angelo who was abandoned by him after her dowry was lost. Mistress Overdone is the keeper of a Viennese brothel.

 

- ISABELLA (Female presenting, 18-30s) A rigid and highly virtuous young woman preparing to enter a convent.

 

- CLAUDIO/ POMPEY (Male presenting, 20s-30s) Claudio is Isabella’s brother, sentenced to death by Angelo for impregnating his fiancée. Pompey is a comic pimp.

- LUCIO (Male presenting, 20s-30s) A flamboyant bachelor who provides comic relief. Although he is a loyal friend to Claudio, he is a frequent slanderer of the Duke and a habitué of brothels.
